White Rock To Have First Dornfelder in Australia

2014 is a very exciting year at White Rock Vineyard because we will be introducing the very first Dornfelder wine to the Tasmanian AND the Australian market!

The pulp of the German Dornfelder grape is red so it gives the wine a really beautiful colour, but it doesn’t pretend to be anything exotic – just a very velvety, easy drinker, and it is a perfect accompaniment for a barbecue or picnic.

Dornfelder came from grapes that have been crossed before – Helfensteiner and Heroldrebe. It was only released into the market in Germany in 1979 and became very popular very quickly. When some German tourists asked if we had any at the cellar-door, it got us thinking that another red wine option might be a good idea.

Our Dornfelder will be officially released at this year’s Taste the Harvest Festival in Devonport in March and judging by its success in Europe, it probably won’t be long before the variety becomes a well-known and popular choice in the Australian wine industry!
